Superintendent Anthony Q. Davis has dedicated his professional career to the field of education. He started his work with the Syracuse City School District (SCSD) in 1986 as a Teaching Assistant and then as a Special Education Teacher before ultimately entering school administration in 1996 as an Administrative Intern at Henninger High School. In 1997, Tony accepted a leadership role in the Liverpool Central School District, where he served for almost 20 years. In that time, he provided a safe and secure educational environment along with a strong academic program for the high school’s 2,300 students.
Prior to his appointment as Superintendent, Tony served as Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools. In that role, he oversaw five SCSD high schools, six SCSD middle schools, 24 Career and Technical Education programs, four alternative programs, three K-12 Departments, two Adult Education Programs, all SCSD athletics, and more.
Tony believes that the key to a successful school district is to bring all constituents together to work toward a common goal, including students, teachers, families, and community partners. “Every voice counts. Everyone matters. And everyone has something to contribute. We in the school district want to be a part of all pieces of the community.”
Tony says his main goal “is to get our students and our families believing in themselves. The system only works when everybody is working together. Our students need to know their value first and foremost, because I think our students can demand more of everyone around them, including the adults.”
Tony has been a part of the Syracuse community throughout his long career, in his new role as Superintendent he began conducting community conversations, where he goes to different neighborhoods throughout Syracuse to discuss what is important to the constituents of their community. His belief is that by listening and asking for parents and community to be involved strengthens the relationship among all parties so that students benefit in positive ways.
In addition to his professional roles, Tony also is an active community leader. He serves as a Board member for Light of Syracuse, a non-profit organization designed to enhance the quality of life for underserved communities. He also serves as a Board member for the Central New York Regional Transportation Authority, focusing on transportation needs throughout Syracuse; and as a Board of Director member for St. Joseph’s School of Nursing. He recently joined the Boards of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Syracuse and the Early Childhood Alliance. He also serves as a Governing Board Member of VOICES for Youth, a non-profit organization devoted to improving the community. Previously, he served as a Board of Director member for the Southwest Community Center, and was a Co-Founder of Brother to Brother, a youth outreach program designed to pair successful and respected members of the community with troubled youth.
Tony describes a successful Superintendency as a city-wide collaborative effort, where students’ best interest are the main focus, and resources, wisdom, and time is maximized through care!
